Abstract
AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF RAINWATER HARVESTING IN NORTH KARNATAKA 2012 RAVICHANDRA BADIGER ABSTRACT LOKESSHA, H Major advisor Water is recognized as an elixir of life, human, societal development and environmental sustainability. Hence, water should be treated as an economic and social good and its management must aim for the worthwhile use envisaging equity concerns, efficiency and environmental sustainability. Comprehensive research studies that focus on watershed programmes, particularly on rainwater harvesting are very few. Hence the study was undertaken with main objectives of assessing impact of RWHS on cropping pattern, productivity, and income of the farmers and examining the feasibility of investment on RWHS at farm level and analyzing constraints therein. The study was conducted in North Karnataka viz... Koppal and Gulbarga districts. The primary data pertaining to agriculture year 2010-11 was collected using pre-tested structured schedules through personal interview method from 120 farmers, 90 farmers with RWHS and 30 farmers without RWHS. The data were analyzed using various statistical techniques including discounted cash flow measures and also functional analysis. The results indicated that the RWHS have positive impact on cropping pattern, cropping intensity, irrigation intensity, productivity and net income of farmers. The net present worth was positive, B C ratio was more than unity and internal rate of return was more than the discount rate indicating that the investment on RWHS was financially feasible. The investment on recharge pit was found to be financially feasible and economically viable in comparison with the farm pond and nala bund. The constraint faced by farmers includes non-availability of credit, high investment and lack of government support. Therefore, low-cost effective technology needs to be designed for the better adoption of RWHS along with liberalized credit from the government
