Abstract
STUDIES ON POLLEN VIABILITY AND VARIABILITY IN SUNFLOWER GENOTYPES (Helianthus annuus L.) VANI KAMMAR 2012 Dr. I. SHANKER GOUD Major Advisor ABSTRACT The present investigation was carried to study the pollen viability and variability in 207 sunflower genotypes (193 non branched, ten branched and four hybrid genotypes). These genotypes were raised during rabi 2011-2012 at MARS, Raichur. The pollen of all the genotypes exhibited yellow colour except two genotypes GP-809 and ARG-3(T) showed white pollen colour. All were round in shape and spiny in nature. The plant height was ranged from 62.50 cm to 192.50 cm and the capitulum diameter was ranged from 6.00 cm to 17.00 cm. The pollen viability was assessed by staining and germination method. The analysis of variance indicated significant difference for all the character studied. The pollen viability by staining technique ranged from 90.42 to 98.99% and the significantly highest stained pollen observed in 22genotypes (>95%). The pollen germination ranged from 27.06 to 79.59% and six genotypes viz., GP-808, GP-6-794, GP-6-854, GP-6-906, GP-6-1477 and GP-6-83 showed more than 75 per cent pollen germination. The pollen tube length was ranged from 42.12 μm to 149.10 μm. The pollen diameter ranged from 35.00 μm to 52.18 μm, pollen length (35.40 μm to 52.50 μm), pollen size (35.20 μm to 52.34 μm) and number of spines per pollen (80 to 105) . The genetic variability studies indicated that per cent unstained pollen, pollen tube length and pollen germination showed highest phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation. High heritability coupled with high genetic advances were estimated for pollen tube length and pollen germination. The correlation studies revealed that pollen germination had high significant positive association with pollen tube length. path co-efficient analysis revealed moderate positive direct effect of per cent stained pollen, per cent unstained pollen, pollen width and pollen tube length on pollen germination.
