Abstract
This study was carried out in purposively selected Jaipur district of Rajasthan to analyse the services of different livestock service delivery systems. The data were collected from randomly selected 120 livestock farmers belonging to each of three villages of Phulera, Amber, Chomu and Jamwa Ramgarh tehsils of Jaipur district through a structured interview schedule. Results of the study revealed that majority of the livestock farmers were middle aged, illiterate, living in nuclear family system, belonged to Other Backward Caste, having small land holding with agriculture as primary and livestock rearing as their secondary occupation. Majority of them had medium size of family and medium size of herd. Most of them had medium level of annual gross income, experience in livestock farming, extension contact, mass media exposure, social participation and economic motivation. The important livestock service providers identified in the study area were dairy co-operatives, private integrators, public departments, private vets, paravets, educational institutes, pharmacies and commercial feed agencies. The livestock farmers predominantly availed the curative services, preventive services, insurance and training and extension services from the public departments and veterinary pharmaceuticals and mineral mixture and other supplement from pharmacies. The services offered by other sources like neighbours and the commercial feed agencies were mostly preferred by the respondents for the supply of fodder seeds and slips and concentrate feed, respectively. The AI services were predominantly availed from the paravets followed by public departments and dairy co-operatives. The services of commercial and cooperative banks were used for credit facilities. Overall, it was perceived that the public departments were effective in delivering curative services, preventive services, provision of veterinary pharmaceuticals, supply of mineral mixture and other supplements, insurance and A.I. services while the dairy co-operatives were perceived to be effective in providing credit facilities and training and extension services. However, neighbours and commercial feed agencies were perceived to be effective for the supply of fodder seeds and slips and concentrate feed, respectively. The study revealed that majority of livestock farmers (70.00%) had favourable perception towards livestock service delivery systems. It was also observed during the study that livestock farmers were facing lot of problems in utilization of livestock service delivery systems. Most important among them were non (disgraceful) availability of A.I./P.D. at doorstep, no provision of subsidy on local animals, non availability of staff during night, inappropriate working timings of hospital facilities and high expenses of medicines and treatment.
