Abstract
A detailed study conducted on 4565 sheep and 840 goats slaughtered at Corporation slaughter house, Chennai from January 1997 to December 2000 revealed 5.6 per cent and 3.6 per cent of hydatid cysts in sheep and goats respectively. High prevalence was observed during Southwest monsoon· (31.6 and 30 per cent) followed by North east monsoon (25 'and 26.7 per cent), Winter (23 and 23.3 per cent) in both sheep and goats. Least prevalence was recorded in summer months (20.3 and 20 per cent) in both animals. Lungs were found to harbour the cysts most commonly (62 and 64 per cent) followed by liver (23 and 22 per cent), hearl(6 and 4 per cent) and spleen (5 and 7 per cent) in both sheep and goatS in the present study.
