Abstract
By adopting L x T mating design, 50 sunflower hybrids were generated using 25 new inbred lines and two CMS lines. The study was undertaken to identify the fertility restorers, sterility maintainers and to assess the combining ability and heterosis for yield and yield attributing traits. Four out of 25 new inbred lines viz., R 107, R HQ R 120 and DRSI 549 behaved as common restorers for both CMS 135A and CMS 275A Few inbreds behaved differentially in the two nuclear backgrounds with respect to fertility restoration and stenlity maintenance suggesting the presence of modifying genes thus resulting in partial fertility. The line CMS 135A was identified as the best general combiner for majority of traits. The testers DRSI 538 and R 116 transmitted alleles with additive effects for seed yield, oil content and oil yield. While DRSI 527 was a good general combiner for earliness, plant height and volume weight. Among the hybrids CMS 11 35A X DRSI 610 was a goosdp escpiefciicf icco cmobmibnienre fro fro rs eoeild cyoinetledn ta.nd oil yield. While, CMS The predominance of non additive gene action was observed for all the twelve characters studied viz., days to 50 per cent flowering, days to maturity, plant height(cm) head diameter(cm), stem diameter(cm), seed yield(g/plant), seed yield(kgfiia), volume weight(^lOOcc), test weight(g), hull content(%), oil content(%), and oil yield(kgfiia). Proportional contribution of testers to yield was predominant for characters plant height stem diameter, volume weight, seed yield, hull content, oil content and oil yield. Hybrids CMS 275A X R 120, CMS 135A x DRSI 610 and CMS 135A x R 120 revealed high sigmficant heterosis for seed yield and oil yield. While the cross combination CMS 135A X DRSI 610, CMS 135A x DRSI 549 and CMS 275A x R 107 registered desired heterosis over checks S 275 and KBSH 44 for oil content. Among the hybrids CMS 135A X DRSI 110 and CMS 275A x DRSI 549 manifested very high self fertility. Results from the present study suggest the possible utility of the selected lines in heterosis breeding programme.
