Abstract
Varietal screening and effect of seed treatment on the incidence of
sorghum shoot fly (Atherigona soccata Rondani)
Chandra Bhan* Dr. Hemant
Swami The investigation on, “Varietal screening and effect of seed treatment on the
incidence of sorghum shoot fly (Atherigona soccata Rondani)” was carried out at the
Instructional Farm, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Udaipur during Kharif, 2017.
The populations of shoot fly (Atherigona soccata Rondani) were recorded in
significant numbers on sorghum crop during the growing season. The investigation
revealed that the incidence of shoot fly commenced in the fourth week of July. The
mean plant vigour and leaf glossiness were significantly negatively correlated with
dead heart formation.
The insect pest infestation significantly influenced the attributing characters
and sorghum grain yield. The insect pest infestation caused reduction in mean plant
vigour of 2.67 and in mean leaf glossiness of 3.00 in varietal screening. Similarly pest
infestation caused reduction in mean height of plant of 14.04 cm, in mean plant vigour
of 1.25, in mean number of plant stand of 10.84 and in mean grain yield per plot
equivalent to a loss of 7.13 q/ha in seed treatment.
Among the eight sorghum varieties evaluated against shoot fly, the variety
CSV-23 was observed to be significantly better than the susceptible variety with a
minimum mean per cent oviposition (53.35) at 12 DAG. the variety CSV-23 and
CSV-20 exhibited minimum average percentage dead hearts (11.22 and 11.76) on the
14th day after germination. Similarly, the variety CSV-23(16.77) and CSV-20 (16.82)
resulted in minimum average percentage dead hearts on the 21st day after germination.
The variety CSV-23 with 20.82 per cent dead heart was significantly superior over the
susceptible variety CSV-10 on 28th day after germination. Among the nine treatments
the seed treatment by imidacloprid 70 WS was better than the all treatments and
control with a minimum mean per cent oviposition (43.31) at 12 DAG. the seed
treatment with imidacloprid 70 WS was observed to be significantly better than the all
treatments on the 14th, 21st and 28th day after germination with a mean dead heart
formation of 11.74, 18.04 and 22.14 per cent respectively.
