Causes, interests, habits and problems of school drop out rural teenagers

Abstract
Two hundred and nine school drop out teenagers were chosen at random from four villages of Parbhani district. Data pertaining to the study were collected from the sample teenagers and their parents by conducting personal interviews and participatory observation. Majority of the sample teenagers’ parents were uneducated and unskilled labourers and their family income range was Rs. 1500 to Rs. 2600 / month. About 34 - 44 per cent sample teenagers took up one or other remunerative jobs and earned Rs. 30 to Rs. > 300 per month to contribute to family income. None of the sample girls and 49 per cent sample boys were substance abusers. The reasons given by sample teenagers for dropping out of schools were poverty (90%), household / farm work ( 84 - 92%) and parental disregard for child education (66 - 76%) followed by few negative factors associated to self, school and peers. Few significant differences were noted in their personal, social, educational and vocational interests except in their religious interest. Majority of the school drop out teenagers expressed problems of compulsory household / farm work, gender discrimination and boredom of routine work which ultimately made them to fall prey of bad habits/ evil things. Measures suggested for rehabilitation of school drop out rural teenagers were; non political and intellectual Youth Clubs, practical oriented diploma (vocational) courses in farming, tailoring, management of garages, beauty parlours and in small scale agril. business and for prevention of school drop outs in rural areas they were adult education, introduction additional income generation activities and raising the quality of rural schools and teachers.
