Abstract
Two hundred and nine school drop out teenagers were chosen at random
from four villages of Parbhani district. Data pertaining to the study were
collected from the sample teenagers and their parents by conducting personal
interviews and participatory observation. Majority of the sample teenagers’
parents were uneducated and unskilled labourers and their family income range
was Rs. 1500 to Rs. 2600 / month. About 34 - 44 per cent sample teenagers
took up one or other remunerative jobs and earned Rs. 30 to Rs. > 300 per
month to contribute to family income. None of the sample girls and 49 per cent
sample boys were substance abusers. The reasons given by sample teenagers
for dropping out of schools were poverty (90%), household / farm work ( 84 -
92%) and parental disregard for child education (66 - 76%) followed by few
negative factors associated to self, school and peers. Few significant
differences were noted in their personal, social, educational and vocational
interests except in their religious interest. Majority of the school drop out
teenagers expressed problems of compulsory household / farm work, gender
discrimination and boredom of routine work which ultimately made them to
fall prey of bad habits/ evil things. Measures suggested for rehabilitation of
