Abstract
An experiment was conducted on “Water quality and physico-chemical properties of soil from ponds of Raigad District”.(M.S.) in the pre and post monsoon season i.e.May2017 and December 2017.The irrigation water samples were assessed for pH, Electrical Conductivity(EC),Cations (Na+, K+,Ca++and Mg++),Anions (CO3--,HCO3-,Cl-and SO4--) as well as Boron. To understand the water quality and utilitarian aspect of water chemical indices like Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR), Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC) were calculated and interpreted based on analytical results. The result obtained from investigation revealed that all water samples from Raigaddistrict were neutral in reaction. In case of EC, among 98 water samples,28 and 21 percent water samples in pre and post monsoon season, respectively and 45 and 4 percent water samples in pre and post monsoon season, respectively were categorized as C2 and C3 salinity class. Among all the cations Na+ was dominant in water followed by Ca++> Mg++> K+.The relative proportion of anions in irrigation water were in sequence of HCO3-> Cl-> SO4--> CO3--.In all water samples, carbonate was absent therefore, the quality of water is good. According to SAR,93.87 per cent water samples were categorized as S1 class and 6.12 per cent water samples were categorized as S2 in May, while, in December,100 per centwater samples were categorized as S1 class. The pH, EC, Cations, Anions as well as Boron, SAR and RSC values of irrigation water collected in pre monsoon season (May 2017) were high as compared to post monsoon season(December 2017). The reason for low concentration of all parameters in waters of post monsoon season might be due to increased rainwater volume of water and by dilution effect, concentration in post monsoon season decreased as compared to pre monsoon season. Fish water samples were analyzed for pH, salinity, cations (Ca++, Mg++ and K+) and anions (Cl- and SO4--). This waterfound suitable for fish raring. The physical properties of pond soil were not changed in both the season. The pH of most of soil samples were neutral in reaction in both the season, EC of the soil samples were slightly more. Organic carbon is high and nitrogen content is medium in range. Concentration of all the cations, anions and micronutrients in pond soil collected in the month of December were low as compared to May. Fish pond soil samples were analyzedfor pH, Water Holding Capacity, Sand, Silt, Clay, Organic Carbon, Nitrogen and Phosphorous. All these parameters are in favorable range and therefore the soilsare observed to be suitable for fish raring.
