Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Management of tuber cracking in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cv. Kufri Chipsona-3 through boron application” was conducted in the Research Farm of AICRP on potato, Bhubanewar during rabi, 2017-18. The experiment comprised of five treatments, such as- T 1 = Recommended dose of fertilizers (RDF) of NPK; T 2 = RDF of NPK + 2.0 kg Boron /ha; T 3 = RDF of NPK + 0.1% Boric acid spray at 40 days after planting (DAP); T 4 = RDF of NPK + 0.1% Boric acid spray at 40 and 60 DAP; and T 5 = RDF of NPK + 0.1% Boric acid spray at 40, 50 and 60 DAP. The treatments were arranged in a completely randomized block design replicated for four times. Observations were taken on plant growth parameters and tuber yield at specified days after planting. Samples of soil, shoot and tubers were analyzed under different treatments. Our study shows that application of recommended dose of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassic fertilizers along with 0.1 % Boron application three times at 40, 50 and 60 days after planting resulted in lowest tuber cracking although Boron application did not significantly increase the overall tuber yield. Number of Cracked tubers showed a significant relation with the treatments of Boron. The foliar spray of Boron application was more effective than soil application of Boron which might be due to continuous availability of nutrients during tuber bulking phases. Three times foliar application (at 40,50 and 60 days) of Boron was found to be superior than other foliar treatments because of comparatively better quality non cracked tubers, which resulted in maximum net return and B:C ratio (1.27).
