Abstract
The present study entitled “Prospects and Constraints of e-NAM in Andhra Pradesh”
was undertaken with the objectives to study the operational mechanism of e-NAM; traditional
and electronic methods of marketing; prospects and constraints of farmers and traders and to
suggest remedial measures for effective marketing. Multistage random sampling method was
used for selection of district, taluks, villages, farmers, and traders. Chilli is the main produce
traded through e-NAM in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. The present study was carried out
in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh putting special emphasis on two taluks Tadikonda and
Piduguralla. From each taluk, four villages were selected purposefully. Fifteen farmers from
each village and sixty traders randomly were selected and interviewed for the study. The
analytical techniques such as trend analysis, descriptive analysis, tabular analysis and
compound growth rate analysis and Garrett ranking technique were used for the study. The
market price of chilli was found to be increased for last ten year with a compound annual growth
rate of 1.94 per cent. Similarly the arrivals were found to be increased for last seventeen years
with a compound annual growth rate of 3.47 per cent. The study found that there was a less
transparency between producer and consumer with traditional marketing channels and there
was a transparency while adopting electronic trading. 585 APMC mandis were connected
throughout the nation of which twenty two mandis were in Andhra Pradesh. Ninety agricultural
commodities were traded through e-NAM portal. Further, prospects and constraints faced by
the farmers and traders were explained. Relief from the clutches of middle men was the main
prospect while registration problem, price fluctuations and lower rate of e-literacy were the
major constraints. Policies such as strengthening of market by establishing online marketing
system through computerization and networking all over the country and by improving
transportation and communication facilities in order to fully integrate the market prices were
suggested for efficient marketing. There is a need to improve awareness programmes to transfer
the knowledge. The constraints faced by the farmers with garret scores were problems during
registration (71.98), lower rate of e-literacy (67.49), fluctuations in market price (56.89),
untimely payments (48.73), and non-availability of computers (31.54), Lack of awareness
(23.57).
