Abstract
Real India lives in village. According to Gandhi ji “Villages are the soul of our country and the development of socio-economic condition of rural mass is the development of India”. India is one of the important development countries in Asia, which is largely inhabited by rural poor with agriculture as their predominant occupation. The bulk of India’s population lives in the villages and is poor. There are 6,40,867 villages in which 68.84% (census of India, 2011) of people of our country are living. They are largely small and marginal farmers, agricultural labors, artisans, SC’s and ST’s. a large number of these people are still living below the poverty line and are leading a miserable life. Keeping in view the topic entitled, “A study of M.G.N.R.E.G.A. on the weaker section of district Lakhimpur Kheri of Uttar Pradesh.” found that majority of the respondents were the middle age group of 36 – 50 years, mostly schedule and backward caste with illiterate having very small piece of land or landless. Their occupation is agriculture along with animal husbandry with labour posses some farm power, cycle was a common mode for conveyance and majority of the respondents use mobile as means of communication. Majority posses mixed type of house, living with single family concept with medium income group (10,000-20,000). Most of them were not the member of any organization due to poor literacy of respondents having poor socio economic status. Out of 80 respondents 40 were beneficiaries and 40 were non- beneficiaries. They opined that MGNREGA is a good programme for rural development and it is helpful to improve the socio-economic status of the respondent. The wages under MGNREGA is used with providing livelihood security in the rural area. The constraints faced by the respondents like, unavailability of worksite facilities, corruption at different level, wages are not paid as per norm, Identification and selection problem, lack of knowledge about the MGNREGA, partiality in providing employment etc.
