Abstract
The investigation on heterosis and combining ability studies in okra was
carried out at the department of Vegetable Science, Kittur Rani Channamma College
of Horticulture, Arabhavi. Fifty four hybrids derived by crossing 18 lines with three
testers were evaluated along with parents and commercial check in randomised block
design and data was subjected to line x tester analysis. The magnitude of heterosis
over the commercial check (MHY-10) was high in the desirable direction for total
yield per plant (129.23 %), internodal length ( 111.31 %), area of index leaf ( 107.03
%), total yield per hectare ( 92.42 %), plant height at 90 days after sowing (DAS)
(55.44 %), number of seeds per fruit (52.33 %), plant height at 60 DAS ( 46.18 %),
number of nodes per plant (40.91 %) and average fruit weight ( 40.12 %). The hybrid
which expressed maximum heterosis for total yield per hectare over the commercial
check (MHY-10) was KON-8 x IC90174 (92.42 %), followed by KON-5 x AAN
(45.83 %), KON-16 x AAN (40.52 %), KON-12 x AAN (35.07 %) and KON-7 x
IC90174 (27.11 %).
The crosses KON-8 x IC90174, KON-16 x AAN, KON-5 x AAN, KON-7 x
IC90174 and KON-17 x KON-19 were identified as the good specific combiners and
the lines KON-5, KON-12, KON-4, KON-8 and KON-16 were identified as the good
general combiners for total yield per hectare. The parents KON-5, KON-6, KON-8,
KON-12, KON-14, KON-16 and IC90174 were identified as good combiners over all
characters based on comprehensive study considering gca effects of 18 characters.
Non-additive gene action was predominant for number of nodes per plant and number
of seeds per fruit. Non-additive genetic component was higher than additive
component for nodes upto first flowering, plant height at 90 DAS, area of index leaf,
internodal length, number of branches per plant, fruit length, fruit diameter, average
fruit weight, number of fruits per plant, total yield per plant, total yield per hectare,
number of ridges per fruit and number of locules per fruit. For improving these
characters, it is suggested to follow recurrent selection or heterosis breeding.
