Abstract
The investigation on “Exploitation of male sterility in development of F1 hybrids in chilli” was undertaken at Vegetable Science Unit of Kittur Rani Channamma College of Horticulture, Arabhavi, Belgaum (Karnataka). Twenty four crosses were developed by crossing three male sterile lines with each of eight testers. Crosses were evaluated along with the parents and commercial check in randomized block design with two replications and data was subjected to line × tester analysis. The magnitude of heterosis over the commercial check (Garima) was very high in the desirable direction and it ranged from -22.00 to 100.90 per cent for average fruit weight, -2.43 to 96.90 per cent for stem girth at 60 DAT, 1.40 to 92.90 per cent for fruit diameter, -18.80 to 86.40 per cent for number of fruits per plant, 2.90 to 82.90 per cent for number of primary branches at 45 DAT, -23.40 to 74.30 per cent for stem girth at 45 DAT, -28.70 to 73.10 per cent for secondary branches at 90 DAT and - 16.90 to 71.80 per cent for primary branches at 60 DAT. The cross KCMS-16 x AL exhibited maximum heterosis over the commercial check (Garima) for yield per hectare (41.40 %) followed by KCMS-44 x PC1 (15.90 %), KCMS-31 x LCA234 (15.80%), KCMS-31 x AL (13.20 %) and KCMS-31 x UJ (12.70 %). The crosses KCMS-16 x AL, KCMS-44 x PC1, KCMS-16 x H-31, KCMS-31 x LCA234 and KCMS-44 x BDB were identified as the good specific combiners for green fruit yield per hectare in order of merit. Among parents, KCMS-44, AL, VN-2 and LCA-234 exhibited significant general combining effects for yield per hectare and also good general combiners for overall traits studied. Hence these parents can be used as testers in future breeding programme. Non additive gene action was observed for traits like average fruit weight, number of secondary branches, number of primary branches, plant height, green fruit yield per hectare, ascorbic acid content, fruit length, days to first flowering and stem girth and hence these traits can be improved through recurrent selection for specific combining ability or heterosis breeding.
