Abstract
The investigation on heterosis and combining ability studies in near
homozygous lines of brinjal was carried out during at K. R. C. College of
Horticulture, Arabhavi. Forty five F1 hybrids developed by crossing 15 lines with
three testers were evaluated along with parents in RBD with two replications and data
was subjected to line × tester analysis. The magnitude of heterosis over the
commercial check (Super-10) was high in the desirable direction for fruit diameter
(52.56%), average fruit weight (49.61%), fruit length (39.55%), yield per plant
(31.77%), number of fruits per plant (26.20 %), per cent fruit set (25.00%), yield per
hectare (9.57%), days to first flowering (-7.59%) and days to 50 per cent flowering
(-7.21%). The cross KB-12-11 × KRCB-2 exhibited maximum standard heterosis
(9.57%) for yield per hectare followed by KB-12-06 × KRCB-2 (9.02%), KB-12-01 ×
KRCB-3 (8.12%), KB-12-05 × KRCB-2 (8.06%) and KB-12-12 × KRCB-1 (6.91%).
The crosses KB-12-11 × KRCB-2, KB-12-02 × KRCB-2 and KB-12-06 ×
KRCB-2 were identified as the good specific combiners for yield per hectare. Among
parents, KB-12-14, KB-12-02, KB-12-04 and KB-12-01 exhibited significant gca
effects for yield per hectare and also identified as good combiners overall traits
studied, hence these parents can be used as testers in future breeding programme.
Non-additive gene action was predominant for yield per plant , number of fruits per
plant, fruit length, average fruit weight, days taken to first flowering, phenolic content
of fruits, number of branches per plant, plant spread in North-South direction, plant
spread in East- West direction and plant height.
