Abstract
The agricultural development is a process through which a shift takes place
from the traditional agricultural to the modernized one, resulting increased
profusion and productivity per unit of resource through the use of modem
technology. Present investigation, “Agricultural Development in Osmanabad
District of Marathwada Region” was undertaken with specific objective,
1) To study land use pattern and cropping pattern in Osmanabad district
2) To study the performance of various crops in the district with respect to
area, production and productivity
3) To examine the fertilizer consumption and irrigation use over a period of
time in Osmanabad district
4) To study the agricultural development with respect to different socioeconomic
indicators and livestock position in agricultural development
over a period of time
For the present study of Osmanabad district was purposiveiy selected. To
fulfi l the objective of the study time series data for the period twenty two years i.e.
(1990-91 to2011-12) were obtained from secondary sources like Epitome of
Agriculture Department of Economics Government of Maharashtra, Pune. Socioeconomic
review and district statistical abstract of Osmanabad district etc. in
analytic techniques tabular analysis and functional analysis such as lineai and
compound growth rates were used to analyses the data.
Study revealed that cropping pattern of Osmanabad districtwas dominated
by Rabi jawar occupied 24.65 per cent of the total cropped area in 2011-12, Newly
introduced oilseed soybean crop occup.ed 5.54 per cent of the total cropped area
in 2011-12. Well and bore well irrigation was major source of irrigation.
The proportion of cattle to the total livestock was high in Osmanabad
district. Significant increase in growth rate of area sown more than once and gross
cropped area was noticed. As regard the productivity of wheat, jawar (Rain ana
Kharif), gram, total pulses, soybean, total oilseed and sugarcane showed positive
growth rate showed positive growth rate in Osmanabad district. The growth rate of
fertilizer consumption that is nitrogenous, phosphoric and potassic was significant
in the district. The socio-economic indicator exhibit a spectacular increase in
urban population, land man ratio, literacy percentage and co-operative society
over a period of time.
In general, the positive growth rates were observed in terms of area,
production and productivity of important crops. This indicate that agricultural
development taking place in desired direction.
It can be suggested from the study that there are lot of prospects tor
horticultural development in the district, it can be possible by bringing cultivable
waste land under horticultural crops. Government should undertake social forestry
programme on large scale in order to increase the forest in Osmanabad distiict.
