Abstract
The present investigation was carried out to study the ‘Studies on Feeding and Management Practices Adopted by Goat Keepers in Nanded District’ The twenty villages were randomly selected from Loha and Kandhar tahsils. Ten number of goat keepers were randomly selected from each village. Thus, total sample size was 200 goat keepers. The objectives were enumeration of goat in terms of age and sex in population, to study the feeding and management practices adopted for goat in field condition, to find out the constraints in feeding and management practices for goats and to suggest ways and means of proper feeding and management practices for goat. The study revealed that the population of 2353 goats were considered for study mostly landless labourer and small farmer found to rear the goats. The flock size was observed in between 1-5, 6-10, 11-15 and more than 15. Most of the goat keepers were reared the flock size between 6-10. Most of the goats respondents were followed goat rearing from the occupation of goat rearing + agriculture and mostly they are from illiterate category. It was further revealed that 83.5 per cent, 14 per cent and 2.5 per cent respondents followed grazing, semi-grazing and stall feeding system, respectively. Adoption of management practices viz feeding, breeding and housing management was studied. The feeding management practices were followed by 73 (36.50%) and non adopting followed by 127 (63.50%). The breeding management practices were followed by 71 (35.50%) and non followed by 129 (64.50%). The housing management practices were followed by 80 (40.00%) and non followed by 120 (60.00%).The constraints faced by the respondents were lack of knowledge about goat management (81.00%), non availability of veterinary doctors (80.50%) non availability of bucks (71.00%), lack of adequate financial support (71.50%), heavy mortality during rainy season (65.50%), lack of housing (60.00%), non availability of fodder (63.50%), lack of knowledge about diseases (59.00%), lack of grazing area (59.50%) and lack of land (40.50%). The goat keepers adopted three methods of feeding extensive, semi-intensive and intensive. The creation of awareness regarding scientific feeding practice will help in improving the productivity of goat keepers. Goat keepers motivated to adopt improve management practices through ix individuals interaction, organizing health camp and field demonstration, the pure breed and high potential bucks distribution as per goat population in field area.
