Abstract
A field experiment entitled “Effect of sowing time and cutting schedule on dual purpose wheat” was conducted during Rabi 2016-17 at Agronomy Research area of CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar. The experiment was comprised of four sowing times (3rd week of October, 4th week of October, 1st week of November and 2nd week of November) as main plot treatments and five cutting schedules (Uncut, cutting at 45 DAS, cutting at 55 DAS, cutting at 65 DAS and cutting at 75 DAS of wheat C306) as sub plot treatments. Experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications. Based on the research investigation, it was found that sowing times and cutting schedules both significantly influenced the growth, development, yield performance, quality and economics of dual purpose wheat crop. Among sowing times, 3rd week of October sowing was found most economical and suitable for both uncut as well as dual purpose wheat crop. For uncut wheat 3rd week of October sowing was recorded with significantly higher grain yield (4,430 kg ha-1), straw yield (8,840 kg ha-1), effective tillers/mrl (189.2), grains/spike (56.0), test weight (47.7 g), net return (80,642 Rs/ha), and B:C (2.15) compared to other sowing times. Irrespective of cutting schedule, cutting of wheat for fodder purpose had significantly reduced the growth parameters, duration of different phenophases, yield attributes, yield, quality and economics compared to uncut wheat. Delay in cutting of wheat for fodder purpose from 45 DAS up to 75 DAS had resulted in higher reduction rate regarding yield and economics over uncut wheat. For dual purpose, sowing of wheat up to 4th week of October and cutting of green fodder up to 65 DAS was found profitable. Fodder cutting at 75 DAS was found uneconomical at all sowing times. Among all cutting schedules, cutting of wheat for fodder purpose at 55 DAS was found best and most profitable at every sowing time tested. For dual purpose, tall wheat (C306) sown during 3rd week of October and harvested at 55 DAS for fodder purpose was found most profitable having green fodder yield (16,230 kg ha-1 additional over uncut), grain yield (4,070 kg ha-1, with a reduction of 8.8% over uncut), straw yield (7,820 kg ha-1 with a reduction of 11.5% over uncut), Net return (88,409 Rs./ha with an increase of 9.6 % over uncut) and B:C (2.17 with an increase of 0.93 % over uncut) and it was closely followed by 3rd week of October sown wheat with harvesting of fodder at 45 DAS.
