Abstract
The development of agriculture is a process through which a shift takes place from the traditional agriculture to the modernized one, resulting increased production and productivity per unit of resource through the use of modem technology. Present investigation, “Agricultural Development in Jalna District” was undertaken with specific objective as 1) To study land use pattern and cropping pattern in Jalna district. 2) To study the performance of various crops in the district with respect to area, production and productivity. 3) To examine the fertilizer consumption and irrigation use over a period of time in Jalna district. 4) To study the agricultural development with respect to different socioeconomic indicators and livestock position in agricultural development over a period of time. For the present study of Jalna district was purposively selected. To fulfill the objective of the study time series data for the period twenty two years i.e. (1989-90 to 2010-11) were obtained from secondary sources like Epitome of Agriculture Department of Agriculture Economic Government of Maharashtra, Pune, Socio-economic review and district statistical abstract of Jalna district etc. In analytical techniques tabular analysis and function analysis such as linear and compound growth rates were used to analyse the data. Study revealed that cropping pattern of Jalna district was dominated by cotton which occupied 38.65 per cent of the total cropped area in 2010-11. Newly introduced oilseed crop soybean occupied 5.54 per cent to total cropped area in 2010-11. Well irrigation was major source of irrigation. The proportion of cattle to the total livestock was high in Jalna district Significant increase in growth rate of cultivable waste land, land under miscellaneous trees, grooves not included in area not sown and total cropped area was noticed. As regards the productivity of wheat bajra, other cereals, total cereals, tur, gram, total pulses, and safflower showed positive growth rate in Jalna district. The growth rate of fertilizer consumption that is nitrogenous, phosphoric and potassic was significant in the district. The socio-economic indicators exhibited a spectacular increase in urban population, land man ratio, literacy percentage and co-operative society over a period of time. In general, the positive growth rates were observed in terms of area, production and productivity of important crops. This indicates that the agricultural development is taking place in desired direction. % It can be suggested from the study that there are lot of prospects for horticulture development in the district, it can be possible by bringing cultivable waste land under horticultural crops. Government should undertake social forestry programe on large scale in order to increase the forest in Jalna district.
