Abstract
The present study was conducted in Osmanabad district, in Marathwada
region , of Maharashtra State in the year of 2010-11 with specific objective to study the
utility perception of goat rearers about osmanabadi goat in Marathwada region. From
Osmanabad district Osmanabad and Tuljapur talukas were selected for study . From each
taluka six villages were.selected-which are having the, considerable population of osmanabadi
goat, from each village ten respondents were selected. Mean. Percentage, standard deviation,
correlation coefficient were used for the research study.
The majority of goat rearers were from(39.17 per cent) were from old age
category followed by middle age category, majority of goat rearers 20.50 per cent and 25.50
per cent had received secondary and higher secondary education respectively, majority
(48.34% ) the goat rearers belonged to the small family size category, majority of the goat
rearers (54.17% ) had marginal land holding followed by 25.83 per cent had small land
holding and 17.50 per cent of goat rearers had no land holding, most of the goat rearers
(60.00 per cent) medium level of annual income, majority of the respondents 35.00 per cent
were engaged in (Goat rearing + Farming) category, followed by 27.50
and 14.17 per cent in (Goat rearing + Labour), majority of the goat rearers i.e., 40.00 per cent
had low social participation, most of the respondents (64.17 % ) of the respondents had
medium use of sources of information, Majority of the respondents (60.83 %) had medium

extension contacts, Considerable number (40.00%) had medium size of goats, majority of the
goat keepers (63.33%) was observed to be in medium level of knowledge category.
Relationship between personal characteristics of respondents and their utility
perception . It was observed that The characteristics viz, education, family size, annual
income, occupation, Social participation, Sources of information, Extension contact, Flock
size, Knowledge found to positively and highly significant relation with utility perception.
While age of goat rearers is negatively significant relationship with utility perception.
Variable land holding having non significant relationship with utility perception of goat
rearing practices.
Problems faced by goat rearers in goat rearing, it was observed that the
important constraints reported by goat rearer is problem of availability of fodder through out
the year and also in the rainy season, shortage of grazing land , problems about getting loan
in time and in sufficient amount, problems in getting veterinary services, problems in getting
price to goat at selling due to the butchers and middleman which creates the chain, Near
about one fourth of the goat rearers having the problem of transportation of goats for to sell
the goats in the market in big cities.
As regards of cost of veterinary aids and concentrates 25.00 per cent reported
about High cost requirement of veterinary aids. 20.83 per cent of the goat rearers were facing
the problem of High cost requirement for concentrates of goat respectively.
