Abstract
The present investigation was carried out to evaluate the effect of supplementation of drumstick leaves on blood pressure and serum lipid profile of selected subjects. Four variations of drumstick leaves powder chutney were developed utilizing Bengal gram dal, Black gram dal, Niger seed. Tamarind, Jaggery and chilli powder. Variation IB recorded the highest score for acceptability test Drumstick leaves powder chutney secured highest organoleptic score was subjected for nutrient analysis. Information regarding the socioeconomic background, health status and food habit of selected subjects were collected. Twenty hyperlipidemic subjects were selected. They were divided into two groups i.e. experimental and control. Each group consists of ten subjects. Twenty gram of drumstick leaves powder chutney containing 4 gm of drumstick leaves powder was supplemented to the experimental group for a period of 60 days. The parameter studied before and after supplementation were anthropometric measurement, blood pressure and serum lipid profile of the selected subjects. The observations were recorded at 0, 30 and 60 days of experimental period. The results of the study indicated that developed drumstick leaves powder chutney contained good amount of protein, crud fibre and calcium. The supplementation of drumstick leaves powder chutney showed non significant impact on body weight and body mass index. The progressive increase in the period of experiment decreased the systolic as well as diastolic blood pressure and it was found statistically significant. The values of total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol were found to be decreased for 60 days over initial value while the increase in the HDL cholesterol was noticed. The values for total cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL cholesterol found to be statistically significant In conclusion, drumstick leaves powder chutney exerted a beneficial effect on blood pressure and lipid profile of the subjects. Thus, it can be included in the diet as the drumstick leaves powder chutney will be useful to promote better health.
