Suchassessmentshelpto determine the work load ofwomen in dairy and suitable areas ofwork improvement, waysofminimisingthedrudgerycanbesuggested. Hence, the presentstudyentitled,"Analysisoftasksperformedbyruralwomenindairy productionathouseholdlevelinMahaboobnagardistrict"proposedforthe study. Methodologycomprisedofasamplesurveyof40householdsselectedbyproportionatelyrandomsamplingprocedurefollowedbya fi eldstudyonsub sampleofsix. Theparametersinvestigatedweretime, participationandenergy expenditure. Energyexpenditurewasestimatedbyusingcarotidpulsetechnique.
Thedairytasksviz.,feedinganimals, collectingdung, cleaningtheshed, collection offodder, bringingfodderandmilkingwereselectedonthebasisofsurveyresults, keepingthecriteriaaspercentageofparticipationondairyperformedtasksand timespent. Theresults onthesocio-economicstatusofsurveyindicatedthatmorethanfifiypercentofthehomemakerswereilliteratesirrespectiveoflandholding category. TheaveragefamilyincomewasRs.53,762.50peryear. Eightypercent ofthesamplepossessed1—2milkyieldinganimalsonanaverageandthemean milkyieldrangedfrom05—2L/day. Thepercentageofparticipationwasmorein smallandmarginalfarmcategorywhencomparedtoothercategories, thenature ofinvolvementbeingpredominantlysoleparticipation. Theobservationsobtainedthroughthefieldstudyconductedontimeindicated thatthemaximum of58.88min wasconsumedintheactivityof collectingfodderandminimumof16.62minwasconsumedinfeedinganimals. Analysisofbodymotionsindicatedthatmilkinginvolves272operationsusing hands,wherecleaningtheshedinvolved116dynamicbodymotionsusingupper andlowerlimbs. Examinationsof the selected tasksdoneusingcarotidpulse rate methodtoassessthe energycostindicated that feedinganimals, collecting dung, cleaningtheshed, collectingfodder, bringing fodderand milking activities were consuming 12.39kjmin‘l,20.81kjmin", 213.4 kjmin"and112.97kjmin'1correspondingly. Thesametasksintermsofpulserateshowed78.6 bpm,82.32 bpm, 119.3bpm, 110.60bpm111.60bpmand108.11bpmrespectively. The aboveobservationsledtoinferthatcleaningtheshed, collectingfodder, bringing fodderandmilkingwerehardphysicaltasksandclassifiedasmoderatelyheavy duetotheeffectoftasksonheartrateresponses. Theothersviz.,feedinganimals andcollectingdungwereconsideredtobelighttasks. Theresultsofthestudy generateusabledataforanalysingtheoccupationalworkload.
