Abstract
Celtis australis and Grewia optiva are important MPTs, widely grown at an elevation of 500m-2500m asl. The present study on “Effect of different pre sowing treatments on germination and growth of two multipurpose tree-species (Celtis australis and Grewia optiva)” was conducted in the nursery of VCSG UUHF, Ranichauri, Tehri Garhwal, in 2016-17. Significant variations (p<0.05) were recorded for different morphological parameters of seedling grown in nursery conditions from all the pretreatments. In Celtis australis, the highest germination was found with the treatment of Sulphuric acid 40 minute (65%); MGT was the maximum recorded in Sulphuric acid 40 minute (9.65 ± 4.89) and minimum in scarification (1.28 ± 1.28); GI was recorded maximum in cold water 24h (1.51±2.31) and minimum in Sulphuric acid 30 minutes (0.05 ± 0.05); SVI was recorded maximum in Sulphuric acid 40 minutes (5172.47 ± 1521.68) and minimum in alternate soaking and drying 6 hour (702.60 ± 299.70); The total length of seedling was recorded maximum in Sulphuric acid 40 minutes (89.91± 1.85) and minimum in alternate soak dry 18 hr. (41.2 ± 56.92) and Biomass was recorded maximum in hot water 12 hour (4.6±1.26) and minimum in hot water 24 hour (1.6±0.19). In Grewia optiva, highest germinations was obtained in Scarification (65%); MGT was recorded maximum in scarification (9.88 ± 1.12) days and minimum in control (3.28 ± 3.14); the maximum GI was recorded in scarification (0.25 ± 0.03) and the minimum in control (0.09 ± 0.04); SVI was recorded maximum in scarification (3751.63 ± 378.65) and minimum in control (1049.00 ± 701.35); the total length of seedling was recorded maximum in Sulphuric acid 40 minutes (71.11 ± 1.85) and minimum in alternate soaking and drying 18 hour (39.79±6.18); Biomass maximum was found in Sulphuric acid 30 min. (3.92±0.87) and minimum was in Scarification (0.47± 0.62). The study indicates Sulphuric acid, scarification and hot water treatment as the best treatment for germination per cent, mean germination time, collar diameter, seedling vigour index, shoot length and total length of the seedling.
