Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Cataloguing of some mulberry varieties and their bioassay studies” was carried out at Division of Sericulture, SKUAST-J, Udheywalla, Jammu to evaluate the best mulberry variety suitable for growth and economic characters of cocoons produced by the silkworm Bombyx mori L. Seven different mulberry varieties viz. NS-1, NS-2, NS-3, LF-1, S-799, S-146 and Sujanpur were selected and fed to bivoltine silkworm hybrid, SH6 x NB4D2. The silkworm rearing trial was conducted in autumn season of 2015 in a complete randomized design (CRD) to assess their performance. Rearing was done as per the established procedure of Krishanaswamy (1988). Mulberry varietal impact on silkworm growth and development was recorded during each larval and pre cocooning stage. The analysis of different mulberry varieties on popular silkworm hybrid, SH6 x NB4D2 was done by using Mano’s Evaluation Index method (Mano et al. 1993). Data on commercially important traits of egg, larval, cocoon and post cocoon parameters were recorded and analyzed both individually and cumulatively. On the basis of pooled E.I. values for morphological parameters of mulberry revealed that, variety S-146 scored highest E.I. value of 63.02 followed by NS-2 ( E.I. 54.04) and LF-1 ( E.I. 50.13) compared to other varieties. For bioassay studies, fifteen commercial parameters were evaluated and E.I. values were estimated. On the basis of pooled E.I. values, silkworm fed on mulberry variety, S-146 obtained cumulative E.I value (56.01) followed by NS-3 (52.04).
