Abstract
The uniformity trial on Loker variety of potato was conducted during the year 1992 at the College Agronomy Farm, B. A. College of Agriculture, Gujarat Agricultural University, Anand. The tuber yield data of 1152 plots (basic units; the size of each basic unit was 1 m x 0.90 m i. e. 1m length x 2 rows) were recorded and analysed to work out optimum size and shape of the plot using three different approaches viz. Maximum curvature method, Fairfield Smith's variance method and Spatial Correlation method. The size and shape of the block was determined and relative efficiency of different experimental designs also compared. The results revealed the followings. The variability as judged by coefficient of variation per unit area (C.V.) decreased with the increase in plot size. When this relationship expressed in equation form transforming variable plot size (x) to In scale, the 2 predictability of coefficient of variation was high (R = 0.96). The rate of reduction in C.V. was more with the increase in width of the plot (i. e. number of rows) than that with the increase in length of the plot. Eight units size plot (1 m x 7.20 m) was found optimum for field experiments on potato. In the present study Smith's general as well as two-dimentional model were not found suitable for determining the size and shape of plot. When the plots arranged in the square or nearer to the square blocks, the efficiency was more as compared to the plots arranged in long and narrow strips. Simple, Triple and Balanced lattice designs did not prove much effective in comparison to Randimized Block design. From the present investigation, following recommendations could be made for field experimentation on potato crop (variety Loker). The optimum plot (net) size should be 7.20 sq.m. covering 16 rows (45 cm. apart) each of one meter length for field experiments. [For conveniency of agronomical operations, 8 rows each of two meter length (7.20 sq.m.) can be taken as net plot ] The plots should be arranged in square or nearer to square blocks to get more efficient estimates. If the treatments are from 16 to 25, the Randomize Block design should be used for conducting the experiments as the lattice designs were not much efficient.
