Dynamics Of Livestock Population - India Vis-À-Vis Tamil Nadu

Abstract
An attempt has been made to find out the trends in growth of livestock and poultry population in India and Tamil Nadu. The annual compound growth rates of livestock population were calculated for various inter-census periods by using point to point approach. The present study concluded that livestock and poultry population in India had shown a positive trend over the years except for cattle (during 1997 and 2003 census), sheep (1972 and 1987 census) and pig (during 1966 and 2007 census). During the last census period, a striking negative growth rate in pig population was observed. For Tamil Nadu, the positive and negative growth pattern was observed in different census period for all the species. The recent census evinced the favorable growth rate for all livestock species excluding pig.
