Abstract
In the present investigation, leaf samples of two susceptible (AKM-8802 and Kopergaon) and two resistant cultivars (Phule M-9339 and TARM-18) were used to study the association of some biochemical parameters with resistance to powdery mildew in green gram. The crop was grown in the field during the kharif season of 2000. The leaves of both resistant and susceptible cultivars were analysed for reducing sugars, non-reducing sugars, total sugars, cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and crude fibre. The rate of oxygen uptake by the leaves at healthy and diseased stages of powdery mildew was also monitored. The contents of reducing, non-reducing and total sugars both before and after infection were found to be significantly higher in the leaves of susceptible cultivars as compared to resistant ones. In general, the sugar level in the leaves in both type of cultivars decreased markedly upon infection. The contents of cellulose, hemicellulose and crude fibre were found to be significantly higher in the leaves of resistant cultivars as compared to the susceptible ones before the appearance of the disease. The level of all these parameters, however, declined under the pathogenesis of powdery mildew and the decline was more pronounced in the resistant cultivars than the susceptible ones. Further, the level of lignin was found to be higher in resistant cultivars than the susceptible ones before the appearance of the disease. However after the infection, the lignin content declined faster in resistant cultivars than the susceptible ones. The oxygen uptake in the leaves was found to be higher in resistant cultivars than the susceptible ones at the healthy stage, but the infection of powdery mildew caused reduction in oxygen uptake in all these cultivars. The results of the present study thus indicated that there is an involvement of some biochemical constituents such as sugars and lignins in offering resistance to powdery mildew in green gram.
