Abstract
Some biochemical parameters associated with the pod
borer Helioth is armiqera (Hubner) resistance of piqeonpea
cultivars, with a varying maturity and deqree of succeplibj1ity
to pod borer, were studied at two qrowth staqes. The pods of
twelve varieties of pigeonpea, viz., 1CPL-87, UPAS 120, TAT-10,
ICPL 151 (early), PT 2U-10, PT 20-3, TV-1, PI' 17-2 (Midlate) and
PT 25, C-11, PI 35, N-290-21 (late) were analysed at two qrowth
staqes viz. green pod staqe and mature pod stage.
The contents of nitrogen, protein, reducing and total
sugars, phosphorus and potassium were higher in piqeonpea pods
susceptible to pod borer while the total polyphenols as well as
the activity of polyphenoloxidase wore significantly higher in
pioonpea varieties resistant to podborer. The contents of
nitrogen, protein, reducmq and total sugars, phosphorus,
potassium and polyphenols decreased and the activity of
polyphenoloxidase increased with an advancement An crop ago,
from the data obtained in this study, it ran l>c
summarised that the pigeonpea cultivars with a varying deqrsn of
maturity and susceptibility to podborer differed significantly in
respect of various biochemical constituents, espociaLly the
nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium sugars and polyphenols as well as
the? activity of polyphenoloxidase.
