Abstract
A field experiment was carried out to study the “HETEROSIS AND COMBINING ABILITY FOR PRODUCTIVITY AND RELATED TRAITS IN BRINJAL (Solanum melongena L.)”.The experiment material comprised of 12 parents (8 females and 4 males), 32 hybrids produced through line x tester mating design and one standard check (Surati Ravaiya). The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications at Regional Horticultural Research Station (R.H.R.S), Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari during Rabi 2014-15. The data were obtained for twelve characters including fruit yield and its components. Significant differences were observed among parents and hybrids indicating considerable genetic variation among these genotypes. The crosses AB-7/2 x NSR-1, AB-8/14 x GJB-3, JBL-8/8 x NSR-1, JBL-8/8 x NSRP-1, JBR-12/6 x NSR-1, JBR-12/6 x Punjab Barsati and JBGR-6/8 x NSR-1 showed significant and desirable heterosis for fruit yield per plant over standard check. Combining ability analysis revealed that both additive as well as non-additive effects were important in the inheritance of all the traits studied. However, magnitude of variances due to SCAwere comparatively larger than those of GCA for number of flowers per inflorescence, number of branches per plant, fruit yield per plant, number of fruits per plant, phenol content and total sugar indicated preponderance of non-additive gene action. While, magnitude of variance due to GCAwere comparatively larger than those of SCA for plant height, days to 50 per cent flowering, fruit diameter, fruit length, fruit length: fruit diameter ratio and fruit weight indicated preponderance of additive component of genetic variance. Among the parents, AB-7/2, JBR-12/6, GAOB-2 and GJB-3 were good general combiners for majority of the traits. The crosses viz., JBR-6/8 x Punjab Barsati, JBL-8/8 x NSR-1, GAOB-2 x Punjab Barsati, AB-7/2 x Punjab Barsati, AB-12/10 x GJB-3, GAOB-2 x GJB-3, AB-8/14 x GJB-3 and GAOB-2 x NSR-1 showed higher order sca effects for fruit yield and its component characters. In the present investigation, the crosses viz.,AB-7/2 x NSR-1, AB-7/2 x NSRP-1, AB-7/2 x GJB-3, AB-7/2 x Punjab Barsati, AB-12/10 x Punjab Barsati, JBL-8/8 x Punjab Barsati, GAOB-2 x NSR-1 and GAOB-2 x Punjab Barsati were recorded the lowest shoot and fruit borer infestation. All the parents (except JBR-12/6 and GJB-2) and all the crosses (except AB-12/10 x GJB- 3, JBGR-6/8 x GJB-3 and GJB-2 x GJB-3) recorded the least bacterial wilt incidence in field condition.
