Abstract
A study was carried out on haemogram during the natural outbreak of intestinal
coccidiosis due to Eimeria necatrix in commercial layer flock of 9-10 week old, at
Namakkal. Blood samples from jugular vein of 49 affected birds and 5 unaffected birds
in the same flock comprising 250 birds were collected, for analysis of H b, PCV, total HBO
Count, MCV, MCH and MCHC. Both the affected and unaffected birds were then sacrificed
10 assess the coccidial ‘lesion score’ by a standard method and scored accordingly. The species of Eimeria involved in the outbreak was also identified. The results were
statistically analysed. _ H
The only Eimeria sp. encountered in the outbreak was E. necatrix. There was a
reduction in total HBO count from 2.35 to 1.41 x 106 per ul, Hb from 9.6 to 6.3 g/dl, PCv
from 25.4 to 19.58 per cent and MCHC from 37.88 to 32.27 per cent during coccidia|
infection. The MCV value was increased from 107.88 to 143.14 fl and MCH from 40.75
to 47.01 pg.
Each haemogram value in the ‘lesion score’ O, 1+, 2+ and 3+ was analysed for
significant difference between the scores by using Duncan’s multiple range test as
modified by Kramrner. The result ct significant difference between the scores will be
discussed in detail.
