Abstract
Field trials were conducted to study the seasonal abundance of major insect pests of cotton and to assess the bioefficacy of some newer insecticides against them. The crop was cultivated at the Agronomy Farm, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Udaipur, during kharif 2004. The incidence of jassids [Amrasca biguttula biguttula (Ishida)], aphids (Aphis gossypii Glover) and thrips (Thrips tabaci Lindermann) commenced in the last week of July, whereas the incidence of whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci Gennadius) was recorded in the first week of August. The population of jassids and whiteflies reached at peak (105.17 jassids/5 plant and 82.17 whiteflies/ 5 plants) during 13th – 19th August. Whereas, aphids and thrips reached the peak level during 20th – 26th August (176.17 aphids/5 plants) and 3rd – 9th September (98.17 thrips/5 plants), respectively. Infestation due to the spotted bollworms reached to the maximum from 27th August – 2nd September (15.62 per cent). While, infestation due to the American bollworm was maximum from 12th – 18th November (20.16 per cent). Carbosulfan @ 300 g a.i./ha gave maximum control of sucking pests that was statistically at par with carbosulfan @ 200 g a.i./ha, lambda cyhalothrin @ 50 g a.i./ha and the standard check dimethoate @ 190 g a.i./ha. Emamectin benzoate @ 9.5 g a.i./ha showed the lowest infestation due to the bollworms which was statistically at par with triazophos @ 450 g a.i./ha, the standard check endosulfan @ 400 g a.i./ha and Bt @ 1 kg/ha. The treatment module in the applied doses did not show any phytotoxic effect on cotton plants.
