Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Effect of foliar application of urea and micronutrients on growth, yield and quality of papaya (Carica papaya L.) cv. Red Lady.” was carried out during the year 2016-2017 under the net house of Centre of Excellence on Protected Cultivation and Precision farming, College of Agriculture, IGKV, Raipur (C.G.). The experiment was laid out in Factorial Randomized Block Design withthree replications and fifteen treatment combinations. The treatment combinations areU0M0= Control, U0M1=Urea @ 0% + CuSO4 @ 0.25%, U0M2=Urea @ 0% +MnSO4 @ 0.25%, U0M3=Urea @ 0% +Borax @ 0.1%, U0M4=Urea @ 0% +ZnSO4 @ 0.25%, U1M0=Urea @ 1% + Micronutrient @ 0%, U1M1=Urea @ 1% + CuSO4 @ 0.25%, U1M2=Urea @ 1% + MnSO4 @ 0.25%, U1M3=Urea @ 1% + Borax @ 0.1%, U1M4=Urea @ 1% + ZnSO4 @ 0.25%, U2M0=Urea @ 2% + Micronutrient @ 0%, U2M1=Urea @ 2% + CuSO4 @ 0.25%, U2M2=Urea @ 2% + MnSO4 @ 0.25%, U2M3=Urea @ 2% + Borax @ 0.1% and U2M4=Urea @ 2% + ZnSO4 @ 0.25%. Foliar application of Urea @ 2% + ZnSO4 @ 0.25% were found to be increased the growth parameters i.e. plant height, plant girth, number of leaves per plant, petiole length and plant spread as compared to control at all the stages of plant growth.In case of flowering and fruiting characters foliar application of Urea @ 2% + ZnSO4 @ 0.25% advanced the flowering and fruiting by 69.49 and 85.51 days, respectively as compare to control. The minimum days taken to fruit maturity was observed under the same treatment.The yield and yield attributing parameters of papaya viz., number of fruits per plant, fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit yield per plant and yield per hectare were increased considerably with the treatment Urea @ 2% + ZnSO4 @ 0.25%. Similarly, qualitative parameters like pulp weight,total soluble solid (TSS), ascorbic acid, reducing sugar, non-reducing sugar and total sugar of the fruit were found maximum under the treatment Urea @ 2% + ZnSO4 @ 0.25% whereas, a reduction in peel weight, seed weight and acidity were observed by the application of same treatment as compared to control. The treatment Urea @ 2% + ZnSO4 @ 0.25%, recorded highest Benefit: Cost ratio under the present study, which will be beneficial for papaya cultivation. Based on present investigation it can be concluded that the foliar application of Urea @ 2% + ZnSO4 @ 0.25% was found best combination by which growth, yield and physico-chemical composition of fruit can be significantly influenced.
