Abstract
An experiment entitled "Effect of cyclic use of sewage water on yield and
quality of cabbage in Ustochrepts" was undertaken to assess the effect of sewage
water on soil properties and chemical composition of cabbage grown on it. A field
experiment was carried out with six different sewage treatments and cabbage grown
as test crop. A comparatively higher values of EC, sodium, chloride, bicarbonate and
nitrate-nitrogen in sewage water were found, and thus when used as such for irrigation
may deteriorate the quality of cabbage. Application of sewage water as such or its
cyclic use improved the physico-chemical properties and nutrient status of the soil.
But it also increased the metallic cations in soil. N, P, K and metallic cation content in
the heads and roots of cabbage subsequently increased when crops were irrigated with
sewage water as such or in its cyclic use. In alternate use of sewage and well water
irrigation improve the yield of cabbage. Thus it is justifiable to use alternate sewage
and well water to establish a municipal sewage treatment plant before such waters are
being diverted for irrigation.
