Abstract
The present study was conducted to evaluate the impact of different salinity
levels on growth performance and survival of Oreochromis niloticus. For this purpose
different salinity levels (0 ppt, 2 ppt, 4 ppt, 6 ppt and 8 ppt) were chosen in 56 liters
static water holdings for a period. The experiment was conducted in triplicate for a
period of 42 days. The experimental fish was fed on commercial tilapia diet (Growell:
4 mm pelleted feed) having 24% protein. The feeding rate was @ 4% of body weight
per day. The growth performance of test fishes was observed at every seven day.
During experimental period, the water quality parameters viz., water temperature
(18.77-29.76C), pH (8.03-8.28), dissolved oxygen (3.42-5.63 mg/l), electrical
conductivity (1.21- 12.76 mMho/cm), total hardness (460-622.67 mg/l) and total
alkalinity (240-367.67 mg/l) were monitored and found for the growth of
experimental fish.
The selected levels of salinity had significant impact on fish growth. However,
there was no impact of salinity levels on the survival of experimental fish as it was
cent per cent in all the treatments and control. Results of this study clearly indicated
higher weight gain in treatments than control. As such the highest (9.70g) weight,
SGR (0.67%) and weight gain in per cent (90.74%) was recorded in 8 ppt salinity
treatment.
Further, the growth gain in 8 ppt was also statistically significant among
treatments except between T1 (2 ppt) and control. On the basis of growth performance
8 ppt salinity level is recommended for O. niloticus rearing under local environmental
conditions.
