Abstract
A field experiment was conducted during Kharif 2015-2016 at Main Research Station, Hebbal, Bangalore. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with fourteen treatments replicated thrice. The experiment consisted of six herbicides oxyfluorfen, oxadiargyl, pendimethalin, isoproturon, bispyribac sodium, ethoxysulfuron applied alone or in combination in comparison to intercultivation and hand weeding at 20 and 45 DAS and unweeded check treatments. Among different herbicides, application of oxadiargyl 80 WP 80 g a. i. ha-1 at 3 DAS followed by ethoxysulfuron 15 WG 12 g a. i. ha-1 at 30 DAS recorded lower sedge, grasses, broad leaved and total weed density (3.33, 13.67, 12.33 and 29.33 m-2, respectively), lower weed dry weight (1.47, 9.02, 5.55 and 16.04 g m-2, respectively), lower weed index (-7.4 %), higher weed control efficiency (90.3 %). This treatment registered significantly higher grain (4017 kg ha-1) and straw yield (5901 kg ha-1) which may be attributed to significantly higher plant height (102.2 cm), number of tillers (41.1 meter row length-1), total dry weight (69.5 g hill-1) at harvest and higher yield attributing characters like number of productive tillers (37.3 meter row length-1), finger length (10.6 cm), ear head weight (10.8 g) and test weight (3.45 g). This treatment also resulted in higher net returns (` 56798 ha-1) and B:C ratio (3.65) compared to intercultivation and hand weeding at 20 and 45 DAS (` 47,910 ha-1 and 2.92, respectively) thereby reducing dependence on manual labour for weeding under present labour scarce condition
