Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Genetic Divergence in Cowpea
[Vignaunguiculata (L.)Walp]” was conducted with 60 genotypes (including three
checks namely RC-101, RC-19 and RCV-7) during kharif-2015 at the Instructional
Farm of Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, Rajasthan College of
Agriculture, Udaipur. The genotypes were planted in Randomized Block Design in
three replications.
The observations were recorded for 14 characters viz; days to 50% flowering,
days to maturity, number of pods per plant, number of flowers per plant, number of
seeds per pod, number of branches per plant, pod length, plant height, seed yield per
plant, number of clusters per plant, test weight, biological yield per plant, harvest
index and seed protein content on five randomly selected plants from each genotype
in each rows, while days to 50% flowering and days to maturity were recorded on plot
basis and average value were subjected to analysis of genetic variance and genetic
divergence.
The estimates of genotypic parameters revealed that differences between the
estimates of GCV and PCV were found least for most of the characters. Higher
estimates of PCV than GCV were observed for all the characters. Maximum
heritability was found for seed yield per plant, seed protein content, biological yield
per plant and plant height. While, maximum genetic gain was observed for plant
height followed by biological yield per plant, harvest index and seed yield per plant.
Present experimental findings revealed that characters viz; plant height,
biological yield per plant and seed yield per plant showed high heritability and genetic
gain. Hence, selection can be made for improvement of these characters. The estimates
of genetic divergence revealed that average inter cluster values were maximum
between cluster VI and cluster VIII. This shows that there is maximum genetic
divergence between cluster VI and cluster VIII. Genotypes in these clusters possessed
highest mean value for seed yield per plant, plant height, pod length and biological
yield per plant respectively. Therefore, crosses among these genotypes are expected to
give transgressivesegregants.
