Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Genetic divergence in groundnut [Arachis hypogaea (L.)]” was carried out using 30 genotypes. The genotypes were planted in randomized block design with three replications during kharif, 2005 at Experimental Farm, College of Technology and Engineering, MPUAT, Udaipur. The observations were recorded on 10 randomly selected plants for all the characters except days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, oil content and kernel protein content where entire population of the genotype was considered. Twelve characters viz., days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, number of primary branches per plant, number of pods per plant, pod yield per plant, haulm yield per plant, shelling percentage, kernel yield per plant, 100-kernel weight, harvest index, oil content and kernel protein content were subjected to analysis of variance, estimation of variability parameters and correlations, path coefficient analysis and study of genetic divergence. The analysis of variance revealed significant difference among genotypes for all the characters. Analysis of variance indicated that experimental material possess good amount of variability for all the characters under study. The genotypes K 1383, JL 501 and JL 24 were found to have higher mean values for number of pods per plant, pod yield per plant, kernel yield per plant and per cent oil content hence emphasis should be laid upon to utilize these genotypes for groundnut improvement. High heritability coupled with high genetic gain and high GCV has been exhibited by the characters viz., kernel yield per plant, pod yield per plant and number of pods per plant. There is a substantial scope for improvement of these characters. Characters like pod yield per plant, number of pods per plant, harvest index, haulm yield per plant and shelling percentage showed positive and significant association with kernel yield per plant.
