Abstract
The present study was carried out on the clinical cases of canine mammary tumors presented to the Surgical Outpatient Unit of Madras Veterinary College Teaching Hospital. The incidence of mammary tumors was highest between 9 to 12 years of age affecting mainly intact female dogs. Among the breeds Spitz was the most susceptible. Cytological examinations of the fine needle aspiration samples from tumor mass and regional lymph nodes and from nipple aspiration fluid revealed the tumor cells with features of malignancy. A total of 18 animals aged between 7 to 12 years with mammary tumor more than 5 cm in size and regional lymph node enlargement and with no evidence of distant metastasis were selected for the study. Detailed clinical, haematobiochemical, radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations were done preoperatively and postoperatively. All the 18 cases were classified as stage III mammary tumors using TNM method of classification.
