Abstract
A laboratory experiment on “Management of lesser grain borer, Rhizopertha dominica Fab. (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) in stored sorghum” at Department of Entomology, RCA and Post Harvest Technology Scheme CTE, MPUAT, Udaipur during 2013-14. Among five sorghum varieties (CSV-15, CSV-23, CSV-17, PC-1080 and PJ-1430) screened against R. dominica. CSV-23 and CSV-15 were found resistant which revealed minimum grain damage of 7.44 and 12.25 per cent, weight loss of 1.54 and 2.15 per cent and progeny development 23.88 and 30.06 adults, respectively, upto 120 days of storage. Variety PC-1080 was found susceptible as it recorded high grain damage, high weight loss, and higher progeny development with mean of 18.63%, 10.50%, and 44.31adults respectively. Among different inert materials evaluated for their effectiveness against R. dominica upto 120 days, diatomaceous earth at 5 and 10g/kg grains and rice husk ash at 10g/kg grains were found superior with cent per cent adult mortality, no grain damage and weight loss and no progeny development. While least effective treatments was fly ash at 5g/kg grains with adult mortality of 52.25 per cent, 11.25 adults emergence , 17.16 per cent grain damage, and 5.01 per cent weight loss. Among different plant products evaluated for their effectiveness against R. dominica upto 120 days, neem seed kernel powder at 10g/kg grains was found to be superior with minimum grain damage of 0.30 per cent, weight loss 0.10 per cent, adults emergence 0.17 and 99.00 per cent adult mortality. While least effective treatments was Jamun seed powder at 5g/kg grains with 70.00 per cent adult mortality, 8.67 adults emergence, 8.16 per cent grain damage and 6.27 per cent weight loss. No adverse effect of inert dusts and plant products has been observed on the germination of sorghum grains upto 120 days after storage.
