Abstract
An experiment on “Damage Potential and Management of Pulse Beetle
(Callosobruchus chinensis L.) in Stored Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.)” was conducted under
laboratory conditions at Department of Entomology, RCA Udaipur during August –
December, 2010.
The losses caused by pulse beetle were estimated by releasing 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 pairs
of adults in jars each containing 500 g chickpea grains.
The lowest mean grain damage, weight loss and germination loss were recorded in
case of 1 pair of adult pulse beetle i.e., 7.79, 1.81 and 4.55 per cent. While, highest losses
were recorded in case of release of 16 pair i.e., 60.93, 13.99 and 44.57 per cent after 30 days
of storage, respectively. The losses followed the same trend after 90 days of storage and
reached to highest i.e., 41.44, 19.26 and 29.27 per cent in case of release of 1 pair of adult,
While, 100, 46.13 and 100 per cent, respectively, in case of release of 16 pair of adult pulse
beetle. The losses were increased with increase in storage period.
Among the different treatments tested for the management of pulse beetle,
diatomaceous earth @ 50 g/kg grains was found most effective which exhibited minimum
grain damage, mean weight loss and mean loss of germination. The mean grain damage,
mean weight and germination losses were 2.37 and 3.57; 0.52 and 1.13; 4.49 and 7.47 per
cent and population buildup was also minimum with mean of 9 and 15 adults at 60 and 90
days of storage. The application of cow dung ash was found least effective which exhibited
21.47 and 32.40 per cent grain damage, 4.84 and 10.26 per cent weight loss and 24.55 and
38.57 per cent germination loss at 60 and 90 days of storage with five pairs of adults,
respectively.
