Abstract
Field trials were conducted to find out the “Seasonal incidence, extent of losses and
management of red pumpkin beetle, R. foveicollis (Lucas) on major cucurbitaceous crops in
South East Rajasthan” during zaid 2007 at Horticulture Farm, RCA, Udaipur.
The investigations revealed that the incidence of red pumpkin beetle on summer
squash, pumpkin and ridge gourd appeared in last week of February at 19.9ºC mean
temperature and 58.90 per cent relative humidity. The peak of beetle population, 2.75 beetle /
plant in summer squash was obtained during third week of April with 31.70ºC temperature
and 27.65 per cent relative humidity, whereas in pumpkin and ridge gourd the maximum
population (4.10 and 3.8 beetles / plant) were noticed during fourth week of April with
31.25ºC temperature and 31.70 per cent relative humidity. The population thereafter declined.
The increase in beetle population showed positive correlation with mean temperature but
significant negative correlation with mean relative humidity. The bitter gourd was not
preferred by the insect as no adult was recorded in this crop during experimentation.
The red pumpkin beetle caused serious loss to leaves of summer squash, pumpkin and
ridge gourd and flowers of pumpkin only. The mean reduction in leaf damage over
unprotected plants during first, second and third month were 28.89, 32.44 and 32.22 per cent
respectively in summer squash, whereas in pumpkin it was 40.47, 30.01 and 29.48 per cent
and 21.11, 31.57 and 31.85 per cent, respectively in ridge gourd. The reduction in damage of
pumpkin flowers were 32.60 and 52.66 per cent during second and third month respectively.
Different insecticides viz., spinosad, carbaryl, neemazol and beta-cyfluthrin along
with endosulfan as treated check were evaluated against red pumpkin beetle. The maximum
reduction in beetle population after 3rd and 7th day after first, second and third spray ranged
from 82.68 to 100.00 per cent in summer squash, 87.80 to 100.00 per cent in pumpkin and
85.11 to 100.00 per cent ridge gourd respectively followed by carbaryl, endosulfan and
spinosad. The minimum mortality, 50.84 to 67.98 per cent was observed in summer squash
treated with neemazol followed by 58.69 to 70.12 per cent in pumpkin and 55.23 to 69.31 per
cent in ridge gourd only. All the treatments were significantly superior over control while
beta-cyfluthrin was significantly different than other treatments
