Abstract
Investigations on population dynamics, host preference of Earias vitella (Fab.)
and its management with a few newer insecticides were carried out at the Horticulture
Farm and Department of Agricultural Zoology and Entomology of Rajasthan College
of Agriculture, Udaipur, during July to December, 2006. The results revealed that
incidence of fruit borer, E. vittella commenced in the 4th week of August. The peak
numbers of infested plants (91.59%) were observed in the 2nd week of December,
2006; larvae (7.51 larvae/10 plants) in the 4th week of November and damaged fruits
(54.33% on number basis and 54.66% on weight basis) also in the 4th week of
November, 2006.
On the basis of larval, pupal and adult developmental parameters, okra was
adjudged to be the most suitable host. On the basis of food utilization indices by the
fifth instar larvae of E. vittella, okra was confirmed as the most preferred host with
maximum values for CI, ECI, AD, ECD and GR. The order of host preference was A.
esculentus > G. hirsutum > A. rosea > H. rosa-sinensis > A. indicum. Of the few
newer insecticides tested Indoxacarb @ 75 g a.i./ha gave maximum control of the
pest, which was significantly superior to all other treatments. Lambda-cyhalthrin @
50 g a.i./ha resulted into moderate control of the pest and was statistically at par with
the result obtained with Indoxacarb @ 50 g a.i./ha.
