Abstract
Investigation on “Management of insect pests and estimation of losses in okra [Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench]” was done at Department of Agricultural Zoology and Entomology, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Udaipur in summer 2006. The results reveals that the insect pest infestation significantly reduced the plant height (cm), number of effective branches and marketable yield of fruits. The average yield of okra fruits obtained in protected and unprotected plots was 158.83 q/ha and 81.05 q/ha respectively, which depicted that insect pests of okra caused on an average 48.97 per cent losses in marketable yield of okra fruits. The results of the bio-efficacy of different management schedules against insect pests of okra reveals that all the treatments proved significantly superior over control (untreated). However, the spray schedules comprising of endosulfan 35 EC (0.07%) alone at 20 days after germination followed by at flowering and 20 days after flowering proved to be most effective which produced the highest marketable fruit yield i.e. 224.89 q/ha with a net profit of Rs. 100476/ha and cost benefit ratio of 1 : 2.26. Spray of endosulfan 35 EC (0.07 %) at 20 days after germination followed by two spray of Bt @ 1.5 kg/ha at flowering and 20 days after flowering closely followed the above schedule which produced marketable fruit yield of 210.02 q/ha, the net profit of Rs. 86420/ha and a cost benefit ratio of 1 : 2.06. The average recovery of endosulfan (0.07 %) and malathion (0.05 %) residues in okra samples was 88.73 and 87.40 per cent, respectively. The initial deposit of 13.79 ppm was recorded in case of endosulfan 0.07 per cent spray which reduced below the tolerance limit of 2 ppm within 3 days. The reported half life values and waiting period were 1.30 and 2.88 days respectively. The initial deposit of 15.34 ppm was recorded in case of malathion 0.05 per cent spray which reduced below the tolerance limit of 3 ppm within 7 days. The reported half life values and waiting period were 1.81 and 4.26 days, respectively.
