Abstract
Investigation on studies on seasonal incidence, varietal screening and management of maize stem borer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) carried out at Agronomy Farm of RCA, Udaipur (Raj.) during Kharif-2002 and the borer incidence on maize was recorded in seven days interval. The incidence of C. partellus on maize varied from 7.10 to 45.60 per cent leaf injury and from 2.10 to 22.60 per cent dead heart formation. The seasonal incidence of borer commenced during fourth week of July, 2002 (Thirtieth standard meteorological week), which gradually increased and reached its peak in Thirty-fifth standard meteorological week. The data indicated that temperature plays main role for the survival of the borer and temperature more than 31.000C did not allow to increase its infestation. The study also revealed that among seven varieties screened Mahi Dhawal was found relatively less susceptible with minimum leaf injury rating (3.23) and per cent dead heart formation (16.10) where as varieties PEHM-1, Mahi Kanchan and PEHM-2 proved highly susceptible with higher leaf injury rating (7.38, 8.20 and 8.43, respectively) and per cent dead heart formation (58.95, 66.82 and 74.33, respectively) during course of investigation. The results on the efficacy of insecticides and bio-pesticides against maize stem borer, C. partellus revealed that all the treatments were significantly superior over control. However, the treatment endosulfan 35 EC (0.07%) @ 500 ml/ha at ten and twenty days after germination proved most effective, which produced least leaf injury rating (1.80, 2.50), least per cent of mean dead hearts formation (12.90, 14.60) and maximum grain yield of 41.33 q/ha. It showed maximum B:C rati, 1.96. It was closely followed by two sprays of acephate 75 S.P (0.05%) @ 165 g/ha at ten and twenty days after germination. It gave the high grain yield of 36.65 q/ha and net profit of Rs. 8260 with Benefit-cost ratio of 1.66 during Kharif-2002. Among bio-pesticides, Halt 5% W.P. (0.03% @ 1.5 kg/ha proved effective and gave the higher grain yield of 30.82 q/ha as compared to other bio-pesticides and net profit of Rs. 5878 with Benefit-cost ratio of 1.47.
