Abstract
The present study entitled “Impact of farmers‟ groups in Punjab” was undertaken to see the performance and effectiveness of the selected farmers‟ groups. It also determined the facilitating and hindering factors operating at various stages of group development and provided suggestive measures for improving the performance of the farmers‟ groups. The study was undertaken by purposively selecting five districts from Punjab. All the members of the ten selected groups were taken as the sample of the study. The data was collected by self interviewing the respondents. Of all the functioning groups Uppal bee farmers‟ group emerged as the best performer group with Functioning Effectiveness Index of 0.87 as this group had higher group goal achievement, group cohesiveness and higher ability to satisfy their needs than the other groups. Guidance from different agencies (87.69%), interest (75.38%), commitment of the members (66.15%) and cooperation (60%) were the major facilitating factors contributed at different stages of group development as perceived by majority of the members of the functioning groups. Doubt about success (64.41%), communication problem (47.46%) and fear of losing the thrift money (32.20%) were the main hindering factors influencing the non functional groups at their formation stage. Lack of training opportunities (71.86%), reluctance of the members to take leadership role (62.71%) and lack of unity among members were the main hindering factors at stabilization and self helping stage.
