Abstract
Twenty eight parental lines and their 52 F1 hybrids were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three replications during rainy season of 2009 for days to flowering, node at which the first flower appeared, days to picking, marketable yield, total yield, fruits per plant, fruit weight, plant height, fruit length, days to appearance of YVMV disease, YVMV incidence, protein content, total minerals and mucilage content. Significant differences were observed among the genotypes for almost all the characters studied. Fourteen crosses recorded significant positive better parent heterosis for marketable yield. The top five hybrids exhibiting highest positive heterotic effects for marketable yield included KS-442 x POS-17 (66.07%), Arka Abhay x VRO-6 (59.81%), PB-266 x VRO-22 (52.14%), Arka Abhay x VRO-21(51.96%), and KS-442 x POS-27 (49.1%). However, only two hybrids namely Arka Abhay x VRO-6 (187.2 g) and Punjab Padmini x IC-117231 (167.43 g) could out yield the standard check Punjab-8 (161.29 g). Based on D2 values, the parental lines were classified into five groups. The clustering of genotypes into different groups did not follow any specific pattern, suggesting that geographical diversity may not be used as an index of genetic diversity. No relationship of parental genetic distance with F1 heterosis and performance could be established.
