Abstract
A field experiment entitled ‘‘Carbon sequestration potential of Nagpur Mandarin’’ was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm, Department of Fruit Science, College of Horticulture and Forestry, Jhalawar during 2012-2013. The experiment consisted of seven treatments based on the collar diameter ranging from 4-11 cm. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with three replications. Among different treatments, T7 was found significantly superior over other treatments with respect to growth parameters such as plant height (3.21m), crown height (3.15m), plant spread E-W (169.53cm), N-S (168.92cm) and number of primary branches (7.43) in Nagpur Mandarin. It appeared that treatments with more diameter had more increase in growth parameters and ultimately dry weight and also the carbon sequestration potential. The total carbon sequestration potential measured finally in terms of dry weight was also higher (7.79kg) under T7. Under this treatment significantly higher dry weight of fruits (5.50kg), leaves (1.40kg), stem (1.10kg), bark (0.04kg), branches (3.20kg), twigs (1.70kg) and roots (3.90kg) of plants was observed. Of the total carbon storage fruits, leaves, stem, bark, branches, twigs and roots constituted 40.58%, 5.13%, 6.60%, 0.24%, 16.38%, 6.84% and 24.20%, respectively. Before experiments, nutrients contents in the soil ; N, P, K, Ca, Mg and organic carbon were observed higher under T7 (10-11 cm). After experiment the values of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and organic carbon were 393.33kgha-1, 30.04kgha-1, 276.33kgha-1, 18.34meq/100g, 10.03meq/100g and 0.60%, respectively. The pH (7.80) and EC (0.47dsm-1) of the soil were observed significantly lower under T7. Of the total biomass produced, fruits followed by roots formed the potent sink in plant. Of all the component parts i.e. fruits, leaves, stem, bark, branches, twigs and roots, the carbon storage was maximum in fruits followed by roots.
