Abstract
The present investigation was carried out to estimate genetic variability, character association and path coefficient analysis among 24 genotypes of onion for 28 bulb yield and its contributing characters. These genotypes were planted in Randomized Block Design with three replications during kharif, 2009 at Instructional Farm, Department of Vegetable Science, College of Horticulture & Forestry, Jhalarapatan City, Jhalawar, Rajasthan. Analysis of variance indicated presence of considerable variability for all the 28 characters. High GCV and PCV were recorded for number of doubles bulb, nitrogen in bulb, iron in bulb, zinc in bulb, bolting and copper in leaves / bulb. High estimates of heritability along with high genetic advance as per cent of mean were observed for number of doubles bulb, nitrogen in bulb, iron in bulb, zinc in bulb, copper in bulb, bolting, copper in leaves, iron in leaves and zinc in leaves. Therefore, these characters can be improved through selection programme. The result from character association indicated that bulb yield had significant and positive correlation with plant height, volume of bulb, bulb weight, equatorial bulb diameter, neck thickness, dry matter content and nitrogen in leaves whereas it had significant negative correlation with number of doubles bulb. Path coefficient analysis revealed that phosphorous in leaves had the highest positive direct effect on bulb yield followed by sulphur in bulb, pungency, dry matter content, zinc in leaves, iron in bulb, volume of bulb, neck thickness, nitrogen in leaves, zinc in bulb, sulphur in leaves, number of leaves per plant, number of fleshy scale leaves, bulb weight, copper in leaves and potassium in leaves. Result obtained from the present study based on variability parameters, correlation and path analysis revealed that selection programme based on volume of bulb, polar bulb diameter, equatorial bulb diameter, number of fleshy scale leaves, dry matter content, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, zinc, copper and iron in leaves / bulb might be effective in enhancing productivity level in onion.
