Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Effect of media on germination and growth of acid lime (Citrus aurantifolia Swingle) with or without Azotobacter” was carried out at Fruits Research Farm, Department of Fruit Science, College of Horticulture and Forestry, Jhalawar during the year 2009-10. The experiment was laid out in Factorial Completely Randomized Design with 10 medium with or without Azotobactor treatments and three replications. In the experiment following treatments viz. Control; Soil + Sand (1:1); Soil + Vermicompost (1:1); Soil + Vermiculite (1:1); Soil + Cocopeat (1:1); Soil + Vermicompost + Vermiculite (1:1:1); Soil + Vermicompost + Cocopeat (1:1:1); Soil + Vermicompost + Vermiculite + Cocopeat (1:1:1:1); Soil + Sand + Vermicompost + Vermiculite (1:1:1:1); Soil + Sand + Vermicompost + Vermiculite + Cocopeat (1:1:1:1:1); Soil with Azotobacter; Soil + Sand (1:1) with Azotobacter; Soil + Vermicompost (1:1) with Azotobacter; Soil + Vermiculite (1:1) with Azotobacter; Soil + Cocopeat (1:1) with Azotobacter; Soil + Vermicompost + Vermiculite (1:1:1) with Azotobacter; Soil + Vermicompost + Cocopeat (1:1:1) with Azotobacter; Soil + Vermicompost + Vermiculite + Cocopeat (1:1:1:1) with Azotobacter; Soil + Sand + Vermicompost + Vermiculite (1:1:1:1) with Azotobacter; Soil + Sand + Vermicompost + Vermiculite + Cocopeat (1:1:1:1:1) with Azotobacter. Among different treatment combinations used the medium, Soil + Sand + Vermicompost + Vermiculite + Cocopeat (1:1:1:1:1) with Azotobacter was found significantly superior over other treatments and control with respect to minimum days required for first germination (15.00 days), 50 per cent germination (24.33 days) and span of germination (19.00 days) and maximum germination percentage ( 76.00 %). It has also given better height of seedling (13.75 cm), number of leaves per seedling (22.46), diameter of stem (3.35 mm), leaf area (1.43 cm2), chlorophyll content in leaf (5.44 mg/g), fresh weight of seedling (2.77 g), dry weight of seedling (1.18 g) and percent nitrogen content in leaf (1.86 %). Further it was also found superior with relation to length of longest tap root (19.76 cm), diameter of tap root (2.95 mm), number of secondary roots (40.66) and root/shoot ratio (2.57).
