Abstract
The present study entitled “Genetic Variability and Character association for fruit yield and its attributing traits in chilli (Capsicum annuum L.)” was conducted under AICRP vegetable crop chilli at the Research and Instructional Farm, Department of Vegetable Science, College of Agriculture, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur (C.G.) during rabi season of 2016-17. The experiment, consisting of sixteen genotypes of chilli was laid under Randomized Complete Block Deign (RBD) with three replications. Data collected on fruit yield and its components was studied for variability parameters, correlation coefficient, path analysis and cluster analysis. Analysis of variance revealed that mean sum of square was significant for the all parameters which indicated the presence of sufficient variability among the genotypes. The phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) for all the parameters was found slightly higher in magnitude than genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV). The heritability estimates in broad sense was recorded high for fruit girth, followed by dry weight of fruits , dry matter % of fruits, fruit length, fresh weight of fruits, number of primary branches, plant height, number of seeds per fruit, days to 50 % flowering , fruit yield per plant , days to first picking, fruit yield per ha and stem girth . The heritability estimates coupled with genetic advance was recorded high for the characters viz, dry weight of fruits, dry matter % of fruits, fresh weight of fruits, number of primary branches, fruit girth and fruit yield per ha. Studies on correlation coefficient showed that fruit yield per hectare exhibited the positive and significant association, both at genotypic and phenotypic level with fruit length, number of seeds per fruit, number of fruits per plant and number of primary branches. Path coefficient analysis revealed positive and direct effect of fresh weight of fruits followed by fruit yield per plant, number of primary branches, number of fruits per plant, plant height, number of seeds per fruit, dry matter % of fruits, number of pickings and stem girth. Genetic divergence analysis grouped the sixteen genotypes into three diverse clusters on the basis of D2 value indicating wider genetic diversity among the genotypes of different groups. The study on genetic divergence suggested that genotypes namely 2014/CHIVAR-9 and 2016/CHIVAR-4 of cluster-I, 2016/CHIVAR-5 of cluster-II, Kashi Anmol-2 and 2014/CHIVAR-6 of cluster-III possessed high perse performance. Thus, these genotypes may be included as a parent in hybridization programme for getting superior hybrids suitable for Chhattisgarh. Hence, the characters fresh weight of fruit, fruit yield per plant, number of primary branches and number of fruits per plant can be considered for further varietal development programme for obtaining higher yield.
