Abstract
Productive and reproductive performance data from 1973-2003 recorded on 445 Surti buffaloes sired by 46 Surti bulls at Livestock Research Station, Vallabhnagar were utilized for the present study. The overall mean for first lactation traits viz., AFC, FSP, FCI, FLMY, 305FLMY, FLL and FDP were 1727.0114.02 days, 212.425.64 days, 515.395.75 days, 1025.2616.73 kg, 997.1215.11 kg, 264.953.16 days and 250.925.11 days respectively, while for life time productivity traits viz., LPT3, 305LPT3,PL3, UPL3, LPT4, 305 LPT4, PL4, UPL4 were 3697.1768.18 kg, 3582.0260.11 kg, 835.3410.47 days, 617.0215.74 days, 5037.2092.20 kg, 4867.5540.90 kg, 1113.0214.08 days and 1015.5429.74 days respectively. Sire had significant effect on AFC, FLMY and 305FLMY while its effect on other traits were non-significant. The AFC was significantly affected by period of birth while season of birth had no influence on AFC. The period of calving had non-significant effect on FSP, FCI, FLMY, 305FLMY, FLL and FDP. All these traits were significantly influence by season of calving. The heritability estimates for FSP, FCI and FDP were low, while these estimates for AFC, FLMY and 305FLMY were moderate at 0.3570.150, 0.3190.145 and 0.2890.141 respectively. The heritability for FLL was not estimable. The estimates of heritability for life time productivity traits upto 3rd lactation were moderate to high (LPT3=0.4570.284, 305 LPT3=0.4150.277, PL3=0.3850.272 and UPL3 = 0.4090.276), while low to moderate for life time productivity traits upto 4th lactation. The AFC had positive and high genetic association with FSP, FLMY and 305FLMY. The genetic association of FLMY with 305FLMY was high and positive while it was high and negative with FDP. The phenotypic association of FLMY and 305FLMY with FLL, FSP and FCI was positive and significant while it was negative and significant with FDP. The genetic correlations of 305FLMY with FDP, FSP and FCI were negative. The FLL had negative and significant phenotypic correlation with FDP while positive and significant with FSP and FCI. The association of FDP with FSP and FCI was positive, high and significant. The genetic gain through mass selection was maximum in FLMY at 6.98 per cent while minimum in FCI at 0.47 per cent of their phenotypic averages. The direct response in all the traits except FCI was higher than correlated response. The selection for higher 305FLMY would lead to an improvement of 32.42 kg, 58.45 kg, -1.35 days – 0.96 days and -3.13 days in FLMY, 305FLMY, FSP, FCI and FDP respectively. When the individuals 305FLMY was available, inclusion of dam's and paternal half sisters record did not further increase the accuracy of prediction of breeding value significantly. The accuracy of prediction was very low when only dam's and half sister's records were considered. The indices for prediction of breeding value based on first and average of first two lactation were : (i) Based on individual's first lactation 305 days milk yield : BV1 = 943.575 + 0.335 I1 (R2 = 30.0 per cent) (ii) Based on individuals average of first two lactation 305 days milk yield : BV2 = 819.865 + 0.435 I2 (R2 = 41.5 per cent) Among selection indices the index SI5 is found to be best in terms of H (Rs. 313.09), RIH (0.53). The index is SI5 = 1.32 (305FLMY) – 3.76 (FSP) + 2.66 (FDP) The rank and product moment correlation were calculated in all combination between four indices for predicted breeding value based on 305 milk yield (BV1, BV2, BV19 and BV22) and two selection indices based on multiple trait (SI5, SI10). The rank and product moment correlation coefficient among BV1, BV2, BV19 and BV22 were higher then correlation coefficient of these breeding value with selection indices. However, all the rank and product moment correlation coefficient were positive, high and significant. Therefore, ranking of individual on the basis of index BV1 would be nearly similar to that of other indices. Compared to other indices the BV1 consisted of minimum standard deviation (103.38), standard error (6.02) and coefficient of variation (7.93 per cent). It also had low skewness (0.284) and almost no kurtosis (3.011). The rank correlation and correlation of BV1 with TBV were high and significant (0.472 and 0.647) respectively. Therefore it could be concluded that the index for predicting breeding value of individual on the basis of its first lactation 305 days milk yield alone would be useful for early evaluation of female compared to indices based on combined information from relative or from multi-information of the individual.
